it would be a great tool to root out spam rings as well, comparing 2 spammers would lead to a nearly or 100% similarity

I just visited about 50 stumblers to check this similarity meter and it I must say I was rather surprised... The highest similarity level I got was "Two of a kind" (about 80%) with lerryn. After looking on her blog I don't see any similarity - does you algorithm consider for what topics the stumbler writes reviews, or it only looks on selected interests?
I also got "There is something there" for George (I wonder why), and for two other stumblers.

Hi,

The meter only uses the ratings (thumbs-up & thumbs-down) in each topics for the calculation. The selected interests in the preferences page is not used. The labels are displays based on the level of similarity.

If you look at the list of common interests, it will show you the top five most similar interests. They may not be the topics you are most interested in. They are the topics which you both liked at the closest level (KL-distance) out of the union of topics you each liked.

Feel free to contact me directly for further discussions on the calculation if you are interested. I would love to get your thoughts on ways to enhance the meter :)

Cheers,

g

any plans for a way to "find" your closest matches?

It would be great if the "Meet people like you" took advantage of the way the meter compares the union of interests instead of just people who share one common interest. That would be the perfect place to show the top matches. Maybe even factor in location as a small percentage of the rating.

WHen I go to Conile's page, it tell me that we have "porn" in common. But I don't have any porn tags.

I like the idea. It reminds me of Las.fm's compatibility meter.

58> Well it is, thats how the idea formed:

ah the memories... some amusing comments I must say, well as least SU is planting some of our ideas :)

(I still don't like it, but meh... I'll try and ignore it)

Okay, i saw myself as others see me, and got 100% similarity "looking in the mirror"- no surprise, but this is weird:

* religion
* radio
* science
* native-americans
* vegetarian

these were the five topmost things in common. now, religion is not an interest of mine, and, in fact i went back and removed most of my handful of 'liked' pages that had a default tag of religion on them and changed it to cult, or removed it, and still religion is high on my list. politics is way more tagged on my pages. art is too, so why this? it would give someone a really wrong impression of me. look at my tag cloud! or don't look, i am not actually trying to drive traffic my way. i haven't brushed my hair....
