New CAPTCHA System

In our on-going anti-spam efforts, we have implemented new CAPTCHAs in various places on the site. For most users with normal activity, only a few CAPTCHAs will be presented. After those, you should only see CAPTCHA challenges if your account appears to be behaving in a spam-like manner.

We apologize for this inconvenience, but it is a necessary step to keep Stumble quality as high as possible. Again, legitimate users doing legitimate activities should only see a handful of these at the outset of the release of this new system.

Thanks,
Eric

Thanks Eric, it doesn't bug me unless I'm discovering too many sites which is a good feature to remind me to stop stumbling :)

1) No apology needed to me at least. I thank you and applaud the efforts to maintain high quality content at StumbleUpon by keeping discoveries, thumbs up and reviews organic. So far I've only been asked to input captcha info about 5 times in total. 4 times while using messaging and once last night when I reviewed a site. A very small price for legitimate stumble users to pay for maintaining top notch quality whilst minimizing spam as the objective.

Thanks a million to you Eric and your team for implementing this.

#2 / #3: Thank YOU for being awesome community members! :)

Yes, unfortunately the roll-out wasn't as smooth as it could have been, and I apologize for that. I wanted seamless / announcement-less. However, things like the NoScript add-on and legibility were an issue. I have made subsequent tweaks to alleviate these issues:

1. If you are blocking the JavaScript, there appears instructions about how to whitelist recaptcha.net.

2. If you get an illegible CAPTCHA, there is an easier-to-find link to get a new captcha from reCAPTCHA (there was always a refresh button, but it kinda went unnoticed).

3. When sending messages to a mutual friend, you will never see a CAPTCHA. If someone really wants to friend a spammer, and they abuse that friendship, it becomes a self-correcting problem: un-friend them. Or better yet, report them as a spammer so we can whack them, THEN un-friend them! :)

Please feel free to contact me if you have further concerns, questions, or suggestions. We're already seeing a lot of bot activity blocked, orders of magnitude more spammers are affected than legitimate users.

cheers,
e

I didn't understand why I was being asked to do this - but did it anyway, and the process was painless :) Now I get it, and haven't myself seen another CAPTCHA request in weeks. I love the intent of the system ~ hooray no spam!
